IANDS has evolved from an organization serving mainly researchers to a much more inclusive one. Today IANDS serves individual needs in five distinct areas:

Experiencers -- those people who have had a near-death or near-death-like experience. We provide publications, contact with other experiencers, and the opportunity to explore their experience in a local small group setting.

Those close to experiencers -- benefit from the same information as experiencers, in terms of learning how to adjust to the changes in the experiencer they know. How to use this understanding to help themselves, the experiencer and others.

Professional caregivers and volunteers -- access to the latest educational materials on experiencer needs and how to recognize the symptoms that ARE NOT from dreams, hallucinations, fantasies, reactions to medications and the like. Explore a wide range of information supporting the needs of the terminally ill.

Researchers -- access to the world's foremost team exploring this phenomenon and the opportunity to contribute by providing corroboration through a multi-disciplinary approach.

Interested seekers -- many individuals have come to look and stayed to contribute, often from finding a sense of purpose and a satisfying outlet for the basic need to have meaningful relationships with others of a similar interest.

We have two types of IANDS meetings in Upstate NY

Local Discussion/Interest Groups: This group include both experiencers and non-experiencers, and are open to everyone. These meetings start with a designated person who shares their experience or a topic is presented, then we go into open discussion. Not a therapy, these groups offer people the opportunity to be in a safe environment with others “who know what it’s like”.

Regional Presentations: Four times a year we hold Special Events. In these meeting we may invite authors, and speakers, or show movies, so we may bring in interesting and fascinating accounts of near-death experiences into our area. These meetings are for a broader range of people and appeal to those who are more comfortable in a “learning” atmosphere.

March 9, 2007 ~ 6 - 9 pm

This month we have Sinead Wilder from Rochester as our experiencer. Sinead Wilder is a childhood near death experiencer - she was attacked and choked to death when she was 9 years old. About 5 years ago she began to remember in much greater detail what happened during her NDE. On the anniversary of her “D” day, she relives the experience of dying and going ‘home’. As she does, more and more pieces of that experience are returned to her. Sinead has also studied and worked a great deal on the shamanic path as a healer & teacher.
Here is some of what Sinead has to say; I was aware that dying as a child caused me to have a much different developmental pattern than much of the general population experiences. Somehow knowing of the “oneness” at such an early age precluded me from really experiencing differentiating or individuating myself in the same way. But that was very confusing for me, because I was caught in the thinking that oneness is the name of the game and that somehow we had it confused here on earth and I needed to somehow bring that oneness here.
Recently Sinead has worked with Virginia Waldron and underwent a Life Between Life session that has helped tremendously with her integration. I’m sure she will share some of her new insights from this wonderful work. Sinead is a wonderful loving soul and you will not want to miss her experience.

May 8, 2007 ~  6 - 9 pm  (This is a Tuesday night !!! )

We are sponsoring Shelley Yates from Nova Scotia to speak to our Discussion Group. Let me summarize her story, which you can read in full at www.firethegrid.com . In short, both she and her son, Evan, were drown in 2002 when their car hydroplaned off the road, overturned, and sank to the bottom of a flooded marsh in Nova Scotia. Shelley was trapped in the car. A voice told her not to struggle or she would not be able to be revived when she would be rescued. She had never heard such a voice before this. She did not believe in God. She says of herself, "I was a "diehard atheist." Yet, she did not struggle, and she drowned. It was 15 minutes before she was rescued. After she was revived, she alerted the EMT's to find her son, who was age 4 at the time. Close to 30 minutes passed before he was pulled from the water. It took more time for the EMT's to get him breathing again. At the hospital, he was diagnosed as brain dead with non-viable organs, and given only 1% chance of surviving. However, Shelley was told by the voice that he would recover if many persons came and shared the energy of their auras for 20 minutes each. She was told that this would in effect "jump-start" Evan. So Shelley scheduled people to come to the hospital around the clock for three days. After 72 hours of constant vigil, Evan opened his eyes and recognized his mother. His recovery proceeded rapidly after that. He was in excellent shape after only six weeks. He did have a short-term memory problem, but now even that has been healed.

Dr. Deborah Wilkinson from New Hartford belongs to a special group of healthcare professionals: trained in nursing, oncology, educational psychology, counseling, and end-of-life issues; having worked as a healthcare provider, researcher, and educator; experienced with patient populations ranging from pediatric to gerontological; and having a personal history that includes a near-death experience. Dr. Wilkinson will speak about her near-death experience. She died in an auto accident in 1975 when the VW Bus she was in went off the road, rolled over four times and ejected her. She landed forty yards away beside the road. In her experience she was presented a choice to return to this life or come back in the next life to complete what was shown to her in the “Book of Promises”. Long before her NDE she had other experiences. First was a pre-death premonition, at the age of 14. “I knew my mother would die. I kept seeing the last night I would see her for months before.” When Deborah was working as a nurse she saw the silver chord snap above the head of a patient she was taking care of when the patient died. Since her own near-death experience, Dr. Wilkinson has researched and published on the subject of loss, death, and dying. She has provided numerous courses, workshops, and talks on the subject to medical, psychology, and counseling audiences in a number of higher education, community, and media venues. She also has studied alternative medical approaches including Dolores Krieger's Therapeutic Touch, Barbara Brennan's energy healing, and indigenous healing practices. Dr. Wilkinson is an excellent speaker has a remarkable account to share; you will not want to miss her talk, which will be followed by discussions.

Ken Prather is a hospice and near-death counselor in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He facilitates the Ft. Wayne IANDS group. Ken is founder of the outreach program, Reaching for Joy. Most recently he has been named as a spokesperson for Spondylitis Association of America
Ken Prather has had two near-death experiences (NDEs). His first happened when he was nine years old as a result of a medication reaction. He fell into a coma and found himself floating in the corner of a room at the hospital. Ken then witnessed a minister and family members give him the “Last Rights”.
In 1998 he received a brutal beating by five men with baseball bats; it was due to this beating that he spent 32 days on life support, three months in the hospital and three years in a long-term physical rehabilitation center. In addition, He had total organ failure and a broken back. While on life support he experienced his second near-death experience. Ken saw many beings of light. It was a journey to love, compassion, and the planes of knowledge. It was a journey where time does not exist. It was a journey home. Many miracles have occurred in his life, including an amazing healing which allowed him to walk again, after many months in a wheelchair. Many articles have been written about his experiences and now, he is writing a book about them called My Journey Back. Ken also writes poetry, inspirational stories and spends much of his time in hospice work. Recently he has been working with the Spondylitis Association of America as a lecturer and a one on one counselor. You can find more information about Ken Prather’s outreach work and NDE at www.ReachingForJoy.org

Dave Bennett (Upstate NY IANDS President) will be speaking on the Six Major Challenges Faced by Near-Death Experiencers once coming back to life! Based on a paper written by IANDS President Yolaine M. Stout, Linda Jacquin and P.M.H. Atwater. We think you will relate whether you have had a Near Death Experience or not! This information comes from the first retreat for NDErs with 25 Near Death Experiencers (including Dave) attending. The retreat was a phenomenal experience, to spend three day with only experiencers was incredibly liberating. We could communicate openly and share our difficulties. It was ground breaking, P.M.H. Atwater one of the longest researcher in Near-Death studies had never heard of that many experiencers meeting together before. So we all helped in putting this report together. You will find it helpful for facing many of life's obstacles. The solutions to the challenges give a path that everyone can follow to overcome adversities.
